Before you receive your puppy, we here at Mylowannalee have already introduced them to the world of grooming. Make it a special calming bonding time between you and your puppy. Establishing this routine now will be very helpful for you in later years.
Yes, regular grooming is required with this breed and will take commitment. Clipping is a very good way to maintain a shorter more manageable coat if you don’t have a lot of time and depending on your weather and location. (hot climates) This needs to be done regularly (four to six weeks.) Between 6 to 15 months of age your puppy will come into its adult coat. Matting can occur, it is recommended that you clip your puppy at six months of age, removing puppy hair and allowing the adult hair to come through. if you are not confident to do this yourself it would be recommended to go to a good groomer for the first cut. Regular brushing is required, and a slicker brush is recommended and found to be most successful. there will be a small amount of hair loss during this time as the coat changes, so to avoid total clipping in the future. brushes and keeping your puppy in a regular grooming routine is important. Some people choose to clip their dogs on a regular basis.
The Cobberdog has a very unique coat it repels dirt and remain soft when dry with a very low to no odour. I have a hairdressing background and loved the challenge. I loved her long hair (Winter growth) and really just wanted to see what it was all about stunning soft beautiful wave. with every second day brushing and fortnightly washes. She was ever so tolerant with me as I learned the hard way. I completed a course at the Sunshine Coast Grooming Academy, and I’ve discovered it’s even easier to keep their coat at a short length.
There is a specific look for the Cobberdog , and there are a few good tutorials around on this subject. I will soon add some more pictures.
(I may do one one day)
Get yourself a good pair of Clippers and have a go. I’ve done a few bad haircuts in my day and that’s ok …lol! You will get better with time. (we all start somewhere) I am more than happy to help Mylowannalee tribe members who return for some grooming lessons for a small fee. Guardian families are done free every 6 weeks. You don’t need to have all the expensive equipment to get started.
